NOBEL PEACE LAUREATE

PROFESSOR MUHAMMAD YUNUS


Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus is the founder of Grameen bank, pioneering the concepts of microcredit and social business, founding more than 50 Social Business companies in Bangladesh. For his constant innovation and enterprise, the Fortune Magazine named Professor Yunus in March 2012 as “one of the greatest entrepreneurs of our time.” At the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 Professor Yunus was conferred with the Olympic Laurel award for his extensive work in sports for development, bringing the concept of social business to the sports world.

In 2006, Professor Yunus and Grameen Bank were jointly awarded Nobel Peace Prize.

Professor Muhammad Yunus is the recipient of 63 honorary degrees from universities across 26 countries. He has received 143 awards from 33 countries including state honours from 10 countries. He is one of only seven individuals to have received the Nobel Peace Prize, the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom and the United States Congressional Gold medal. He has appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, Newsweek and Forbes Magazine.

Professor Yunus has been stressing the need for a basic decision of ‘No Going Back’ to the old ways of thinking and doing. He proposes to create new roads to go to a new destination by creating a World of 3 zeros – zero net carbon emission, zero wealth concentration for ending poverty once for all, and zero unemployment by unleashing entrepreneurship in everyone.

His recent focuses are:

a. Professor Yunus has been campaigning for making the Covid 19 Vaccine as a Global Common Good since June, 2020, urging the World Trade Organization to place a temporary waiver on Intellectual Property rights on vaccines to free up the global capacity to produce vaccines at all locations around the world.

b. Professor Yunus has launched a programme of creating a network of 3ZERO Clubs, each club to be formed by five young people. The programme aims to engage the global youth in initiating actions for creating solutions for global problems.


DATIN DR. SYAHIRA HAMIDON

Datin Dr Syahira is in the senior management of the Administrative and Diplomatic Service, Government of Malaysia. She is currently an Under Secretary in Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (MEDAC), Malaysia.

She has been exposed to all aspects of management work, serving in various ministries, namely Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Public Service Department, Ministry of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, and now MEDAC.

Dr Syahira also prepares inputs for various plans of the country like Long Term Framework Plan, Malaysia Five Year Plan, Annual and Mid Term Review, National Fiscal Policy and Plan, from the MEDAC and entrepreneurship perspective.

Dr Syahira plays a crucial role currently in helping the country come up with immediate action plans and strategies for businesses to face the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic. She is the key person behind the country’s Recovery Plan for Entrepreneurs and Cooperatives amidst Covid-19 as well as the Transformational Plan for Cooperatives in Malaysia. She leads studies undertaken by MEDAC on the impact of COVID-19 on businesses and consumers, and the effectiveness of government interventions.

Her current job is to formulate policies, implement and coordinate them, especially the national policy and strategic plan of entrepreneurship development in Malaysia such as the National Entrepreneurship Policy 2030, launched in 2019, that aims at making Malaysia an Entrepreneurial Nation by the year 2030. That covers studying and improving the entrepreneurship ecosystem in Malaysia, coordinating and overseeing the role of entrepreneurship development organisations including cooperatives, and comparing Malaysia with what other countries do. She handles too both cabinet and parliamentary matters of the Ministry.

WAN FAIZAL BIN MOHD ANWAR

Wan Faizal joined Green Tech Malaysia in September 2013 and is responsible for the Human Potential and Sustainable Workplace, as well as the overall organizational dynamics of Green Tech Malaysia. He is currently working on transforming Green Tech Malaysia into a relationship-based organization.

Wan Fazial has more than 15 years of experience in innovation management, process improvement and organisational development. He has been instrumental in a series of transformation initiatives in R&D organisations; and managed projects in a diverse range of portfolios from distribution automation, solar photovoltaic and software development to green technology policies. He has also assumed leadership positions in various non-technical support functions including human resources, business development, information technology, strategic planning and quality management systems.

He is currently leading the JaGUH Programme, an initiative to facilitate participation in green entrepreneurship among graduates.

ANJA JULIAH ABU BAKAR

Anja is the Founder and Social Impact Director of Athena Holdings Sdn Bhd, a social enterprise company established in 2015 that manufactures and distributes eco-friendly sanitary products and promotes eco friendly lifestyle. Athena eliminates the experience of physical discomfort, a natural solution for personal care (www.athenaempowers.com ).

Anja's expertise is in Social Enterprise business model and currently sits in the Chamber of Social Entrepreneur Development (CSED Malaysia) as President for the term 2020-2022. CSED Malaysia is an avenue for Malaysia's social entrepreneurs and relevant stakeholders that champion social entrepreneurship in Malaysia (https://www.malaysiacsed.com/ ).

As a social entrepreneur, Anja was listed as Malaysia's Top 10 Female Social Entrepreneurs in 2016; awarded Outstanding ASEAN Women Entrepreneur in Hanoi, Vietnam; invited to SE Forum in Stockholm, Sweden in 2016 and as Social Enterprise guest mentor in 2017; a recipient of STAR Malaysia Golden Heart Awards in 2017 and invited to the White House in Washington DC in 2019 for her work in women economics empowerment by Ms Ivanka Trump, Advisor to the President of the United State of America (https://eca.state.gov/ivlp/overcoming-barriers-womens-economic-participation ). Anja founded Sisterhood Alliance, a registered NGO that advocates social changes by empowering young girls with life skills education (https://www.facebook.com/mysisterhood.org/ ).

Anja currently coaches’ companies who wish to switch their business model from conventional to social enterprise model and since 2016, have mentored close to 100 startups in social enterprise ecosystems.
